Our Evidence
BiomeMega’s work started with the discovery, testing and trials of probiotic species that produce Omegas 7 and 9. They have furthered this finding through the isolation of additional bacteria and filamentous fungi producing omegas 3 and 6, short-chain fatty acids and antioxidants. The group now uses precision fermentation to promote scalability and to create a range of fatty acid profiles, while elaborating genetic constructs with the next generation of probiotic-derived ingredients.
BiomeMega’s non-GMO animal trials (rats, dogs and poultry) showed exciting and encouraging results, aligned with in vivo production of Omega fatty acids (e.g. increased lean muscle growth, boost of beneficial species in the gut, extended lifespan, lack of organ toxicity, diabetes and obesity prevention, etc) which they now intend to explore with large industry partners.
As an additional goal parallel to precision fermentation, the platform group is also designing functional peptides for ex vivo modification and delivery through their omega membrane fragments, for use in health products and cosmetic formulations.

It strengthens cell membranes in times of environmental stress and pressure, but Omega 3 supply needs genetic “tweaking” to:
1) be sustainably supplied to industry,
2) be delivery continuously to the body from a probiotic source, and
3) to become a medicine able to treat chronic diseases.

These include Omega 7s and 9s, and both have a tremendous unexplored medical potential as industry’s current focus is on Omega 3 (Omega 7 present price = AUD 1,500 per Kg).
Two probiotic species in our library produce O7 and O9, and our marine bacteria need to be investigated.

They are known to prevent the onset and aggravation of diseases triggered by today’s lifestyle, and we want to prove their efficacy also as therapeutics.

A new field called “Post-biotics” is currently much discussed by BigPharma, and we study the use of probiotic membranes as medicines (either for direct use or as models to make chemicals better).
